Abstract
In children, acute cough is a common symptom, which can adversely affect the quality of children's and their care givers' lives. Though the effectiveness of over the counter cough medicines is controversial, billions of dollars are spent worldwide to treat acute cough. In Lebanon, there is folk wisdom of using SO for ameliorating cough in children. The proposed double blind, placebo controlled randomized trial aims to examine the role of SO in reducing the frequency and severity of acute cough in children 2-10 years of age. One hundred and forty children with cough related to common cold and satisfying the inclusion criteria will be recruited from primary health care centers over 12 weeks period. Children will be given either the SO or placebo syrup over three consecutive nights.

Parents will keep a diary on response to intervention over three days. Analysis will be done on intention to treat basis. Study monitoring committee will review the progress of the study.
